Cora

Cora is long overdue for an update post too!

Cora took gymnastics classes starting in January this year. They ended in May, and hopefully are starting up again this fall. She had a great teacher who was very encouraging with a fun personality. Cora learned so much! She learned her cartwheels, handstands, and arch-up right away. Then she had quite a spell where she didn't catch onto the next skills very quickly, and got a little frustrated. However, she kept on working and working, and she had some family visitors to class to help encourage her. She finally did her one-handed cartwheel, back bend, spiderwalk walk across the whole room, and kickover. She's a bit out of practice now, but I bet she'll catch onto them quickly again once classes start. She is a hard worker!
Cora loves to play board games, and really enjoys playing the Wii too. She likes Just Dance Kids, Mario Party, and the Brain Game. She also likes watching PBS kids (now that we don't have cable anymore!) and Strawberry Shortcake movies.
We have a collection of scripture flannel board stories that we use for most of our Family Home Evenings. Kevin or I will tell the story once, and then the girls each get a turn to tell it to us. Cora has a great memory and knows lots of scripture stories this way! She loves to answer questions in Primary, and keeps her mini set of scriptures on her nightstand to 'read' each night. She also likes to repeat verses as Kevin reads out loud during our family scripture reading at night.
When she turned 5, Cora became eligible for her very own library card. She's so proud of it! It turns out, one of the main reasons she wanted it is because you need a card to play the computer games at the library :). But I appreciate the extra holds it gives us too for our library books. Cora really enjoys our weekly trips to the library.
Cora is great at making friends, and organized playdates once a week are no longer enough for her! It's so fun that we have lots (5!) of little girls on our street to play with that she can walk to by herself to ask them over to play.
Cora is a great sleeper and a good eater too. She's finally to a stage where she'll go to sleep when she's tired with no fuss, and eat her meals without a lot of pushing (instead of eating a couple bites and being hungry 20 minutes later). She is an early riser though-- usually around 6:00am!
Cora knows all her letters and sounds and it beginning to read words. We're working through a reading book that is helpful. She also does a few pages of math, number, or letter practice workbooks each day. She thinks rhyming is so cool and she and Violet both will randomly rhyme words throughout the day.
Cora has an easy-going personality and is usually up to try anything. It's fun to take her out to do more 'big kid' things and know that she'll have a great time.
Cora is a big helper. She helps clean up, makes her bed well each day, and is eager to help fold laundry, weed, or whatever else I'm doing.
She's also a great big sister. She can be very protective (sometimes overly so!) making sure Violet and Luke are happy (most of the time!).
Cora is cheerful, loving, eager to learn, and fun. We're so happy to have her in our family!

Violet

Ah, it's been so long since I've done updates for Cora and Violet! It's hard for me to remember all the things they are doing when I sit down to write a post. Anyway.

Violet loves the "Where is thumbkin?" song. And that's what she calls her thumb now, as in, "Mommy, my thumbkin has an owie".
Violet loves puzzles and games. She does great with her puzzles--depending on her ambition level of the day, she can usually do a 24 or 35 piece puzzle by herself, or a 48 piece puzzle with a little encouragement. She also loves to play games. Our favorites are Zingo, Cariboo Cranium (thanks for the recommendation Kenzee!), Don't Break the Ice, and Memory. Always Memory!
Violet loves nursery. Each Sunday on the way home from church we get the nursery report: who cried, whose mom stayed, what the snacks were, what she colored. She especially loves Singing Grandma who comes in to do singing time each week. I love that we have great nursery leaders!
Violet is thrilled to be going to preschool this year! She'll start at the end of August, going for 2 hours twice a week. A few months ago Violet started writing her name, without an e. We worked on e's and now she does them perfectly! She gets excited to point out the letters of her name when we see them around town. She knows a few other letters too. I think preschool will be so fun for her.
Violet has been doing pretty well with not having potty accidents. She must sleep deeply though, because when she needs to go potty in the middle of the night, she comes to our bed to tell us. Nevermind that she walks past 2 bathrooms to get there!
Violet likes to do crafts, especially painting.
Violet and Luke have a love-hate relationship... already. She likes to pester him, he likes to pester her in return. Luke rarely passes up an opportunity to poke Violet or pull her hair if she's laying on the floor getting dried off after her bath or relaxing in her beanbag. Maybe they'll grow out of this??
Violet loves mangoes, goldfish, hot dogs, turkey sandwiches, rice and beans, peas, and cucumbers with white dip (ranch dressing) or brown dip (balsamic vinegar). Mint icecream is her favorite dessert. She loves mint! Violet is really good at not eating when she is full, she'll even leave a cookie half-eaten if she's just done.
Violet likes to play with My Little Ponies, play in the sandbox, Strawberry Shortcake polly pockets, ride her scooter, and really, whatever Cora is doing. They are good friends, even if they've started to bicker a bit more lately. Sometimes she'll get invited along to Cora's playdates, and she really loves that!
Violet hasn't figured out yet that sleep is good for her! Bedtime is still a struggle, even if she is super tired. Ah, hopefully she'll get this soon! If it gets too repetitive, Kevin or I will camp outside her door with a book and send her back in right after she comes out. That seems to help.
Usually Violet is shy around new people, but once she feels comfortable, you'll hear lots of stories and all about her world. She can be quite the chatterbox!
What a cutie! We're so happy to have her in our family!

Ellis Family Reunion 2011

We had a lovely time at our Ellis family reunion, of course, as we always do! We got there right in time for a yummy dinner Thursday night, and got to visit in the evening. Friday was a big day, full of races! There was a 5K, a kids fun run, a little kids fun run, a fun triathlon, and the duck race. In the afternoon we did crafts, games, the water slide, the candy rockets, and played on the toys. Friday night was the family meeting and slideshow, and our favorite chicken in the barrel traditional dinner. Saturday was more hanging out and packing up, with floating the rapids for the big kids. We had a great time! I'm so grateful to Grandma, Uncle Ron, and Aunt Lynne for hosting us all each year. It's so fun to be together, and I love it that my kids can have so much fun and get to know their family. The only thing I'd change is Luke's sleeping problems-- hopefully he'll remedy that by next year!

Here are way too many pictures to document our weekend-- I had such a hard time choosing.

Flower crafting
Cora was just the right age (and temperament) for the water slide this year... she loved it!

Luke and Violet enjoyed this slide the most
5K Winners
We did 3 kids fun runs... the older kids did two loops around the windbreak first. Then these guys did their one loop race. Cora is in the green shirt in the middle.

At the start line
Ready, get set, go! We had a leader and a tail for this group.
Cora coming across the finish line
All of the racers with their awards
Not to be left out, the smallest kids had their race on the front lawn
Go Violet!
The triathlon consisted of running down the ditch, biking on an obstacle course, and running around both houses. Pretty funny! The ditch sure got cleaned out from all the runners!
Then it was the ducks' turn
Some of the cousins borrowed grandma's bathrobes and housecoats to see the Harry Potter movie
Luke showing off his belly button for the camera
The kids, especially Luke, were all fascinated with baby Alyvia
Violet was thrilled with so many people she could beg to push her on the swing. Lucky girl! And nice cousins, aunts, and uncles!
Luke loved this little scooter
He also was lucky to come home with one of Grandpa's hats!
And a few videos...
