Luke at 18 months

Luke turned 18 months old and got to go to nursery for the first time a few weeks ago. Kevin is delighted to no longer be chasing Luke around during Sunday School and Priesthood, even if he might have to sit in on nursery for a little bit yet. Luke did not want to be left there alone the first day, but Kevin left after about 15 minutes the second time. Hopefully Luke will get more comfortable soon. I know he'll love it once it is familiar to him.
Our little Lukey has most of his basic toddler skills down now- blowing kisses, waving, giving hugs and kisses, using a fork and spoon, pointing to his nose, ears, hair, and belly button. Luke will clap for himself when he does something he thinks is particularly impressive. He can follow simple commands, like go get a diaper and put that away. His pointer finger gets a good workout showing us what he wants or what is interesting to him. He recently started folding his arms, and tries to kneel during prayer time. That lasts about 5 seconds, but it's pretty cute. He can now open doors, but thankfully hasn't been as interested in the bathroom lately. We just have to be careful to keep the deadbolts locked so he doesn't escape.
Luke loves being outside, and one of his life's greatest injustices is that the girls can go outside without me, but he can't. When we are in the garage, he'll walk to his stroller or trike and let us know in a loud way that he'd rather be on a walk! He is a very busy boy, always running around and playing.
Luke certainly pays attention to what we are doing and is a great mimic. He can cuddle, soothe, and feed a dolly just like Cora and Violet. If they start doing their gymnastics tricks, he'll attempt a forward roll. He requires his own Wii remote (usually with the battery taken out so he doesn't turn off the game) when we play. He wipes down many surfaces with a dry sponge, dusts, and pretends to vacuum just like me. (In fact, most of his tantrums are centered around a great desire to use the hand or floor dusters or vacuum attachments when I'm using them.) He follows Kevin around the house shouting 'Da, Da', plays on his pretend laptop, and wants to water the flowers and do whatever his dad is doing. He always wants a bite of whatever we're eating, and takes breaks to run back to have a bite of Kevin's cereal baby bird style while he's playing.
Luke's ears are finely tuned to hear any motorized vehicle or appliance-- he'll come running when he hears them to check it out. He love to play with his trucks and cars, and was delighted when I got some Cars dive toys for the bathtub. Needless to say, they don't get played with only in the bathtub! He loves animals, playing with our toys animals, showing us animals he finds in pictures and books, and seeing animals at the zoo. He is both apprehensive and thrilled by animals close to him. He is pretty used to Shad and Jen's dogs now, and was very interested in but a little shy around Deb's and TaRhea's dogs at the family reunion.
Luke loves to eat oatmeal, chicken nuggets and all kinds of fruit, especially mangoes. He loves pretzels and popsicles, string cheese is his favorite snack. He doesn't like the texture of rice or scrambled eggs, but will eat pretty much anything else, unless something more exciting is going on somewhere else. Luke is a very appreciative eater and says many hearty "mmm's" while eating something he enjoys. He's got most of his teeth now, except his two year molars.
Luke hates being left behind. Whenever he sees that someone is getting ready to go somewhere, he hangs out by the garage door hoping that he can go too. If he hears me call "Shoe Time!" he echos "doo ime!" and runs for the shoe basket.
For the longest time, the only word Luke was saying consistently was 'Da'. The girls, especially Violet, were speaking more words much earlier than this. But all kids are different I guess. A few weeks ago we recognized that Luke is saying "I want this" when he points to an object. So apparently he is saying what is most important to him to get what he wants! He can say 'yes', 'look', 'banana', and 'that', but 'I want this' is definitely his most repeated phrase.
He's our little lovey Lukey, and we're so happy to have him in our family!

At 18 months, Luke weighs 22.6 pounds (10th percentile) and is 31.69 inches tall (31st percentile)

Happy Pioneer Day!

Thursday was our full day of fun for the week. We got to cross a bunch of items off of our summer fun list.

First we took a tour of Mrs. Cavanaughs chocolate factory (fun, yummy samples, but not as much going on as the Sweets tour).

Next we went to the Pioneer Museum. I have been wanting to go there for a couple of years now. It was fun to do around Pioneer Day. Cora and I are almost through the first Little House on the Prairie book, so it was fun for her to see some items similar to the ones described in the book.

Next was the Salt Lake Cemetery. I've been looking forward to hunting down the different prophets' graves located there. I thought it might be a fun hunt for the kids too. However, it was definitely the failure of the day. In my excitement to go, I failed to recognize that hunting for specific graves from a tiny map while pushing a double stroller in a hilly area with kids who can't read and two kids who won't walk, in 90 degree weather would not be a good idea. Lucky for the kids, I realized the futility early on and didn't torture us more than necessary. I'll just have to save that idea for another 5 years!

After dinner we all went to the Black Ridge reservoir (aka Herriman Beach) for the evening. It just recently opened after some reconstruction, so it was our first time of the summer. So much fun! The kids loved digging, wading, and swimming. Luke was thrilled that no one kept pulling him out of the water (like at the Oregon beach). The girls could have stayed longer, but Luke got tired and cold. Even with shivering and goosebumps, he still wanted to be in the water! So next time we'll have to go earlier. What fun to have it so close.

And of course, I forgot my camera on every outing of the day. At least I got a cute bonnet shot between activities at home. The girls think their new pioneer dress-ups are pretty fun!

Lukey at the Splash Pad

We tried out a new splash pad by our house this week. It was a hit! It was actually our first splash pad outing of the summer, and I was delighted to see how much Luke loved it! Cora had a fun time there too, but I think she spent more time playing on the adjacent playground than in the water. Violet was a bit of a wet blanket, and didn't want to do much of anything. But little Lukey splashed in puddles, ran through puddles, crawled in puddles, and touched the streams of water to his heart's content. Until after about an hour he got cold and wanted nothing more to do with it. It was a fun time, we'll have to go again soon!

Orange Crush

Cora's soccer is called Orange Crush. They've played two games now, and Cora has been lucky to have Grandma and Grandpa at one game, and Kissie and Pata at the other. The kids are still learning o so much about soccer, but they are pretty cute and excited about the game. A snack and drink afterward doesn't hurt :). Cora does a great job getting in with the pack to kick the soccer ball.
Team cheer at half-time. Kevin does a great job coaching. Luke is just jealous he's not out on the field... ahem, well, I've tried my best to keep him off the field, for a few more years at least. The first game he sat corralled at the sidelines yelling out "Da! Da!".

Kevin reminding the kids which way their goal is. Heehee.

Three more games to go!

Butterflies!

Three days before Cora's birthday, her early birthday present came in the mail.... 5 caterpillars! We watched them eat and eat and eat for about 8 days, they doubled in size.
Then we watched them build their cocoons. One didn't survive (the company guarantees that 3 will turn to butterflies), but the other four hung from the top of the jar and we watched them spin and spin.

About 8 days later, we got butterflies! We were lucky and saw one of them come out from start to finish. We fed them orange slices, sugar water, and watched their long tongues stick out to drink up.

Five days later (before we went out of town for the weekend), we let them go. One stayed on a neighbor's roof for a while and one stayed on the grass for a few minutes, but then they were off to explore.
Now whenever Cora sees a butterfly, she thinks it might be one of ours :). This was a great activity-- they girls loved having a 'pet', it was fun and interesting to see the butterfly life cycle close-up, and we can order more caterpillars to use with the same butterfly cage another time.

This week

Kevin had an in-town conference on Friday and Saturday this week, so he got Thursday off to compensate-- lucky us! We took the opportunity to visit This is the Place. I haven't been since I visited for work years ago, so it was fun to go see all the ways it has changed... and grown! We spend far longer there than I planned, and we still didn't see it all. We did catch a few sprinkles, but it was nice to avoid weekend crowds and have Kevin there to help with the kids. There is so much to do, but it's a little spread out for little legs, and taking the stroller on and off a trolley or train while juggling three kids is always an adventure I'd rather avoid. We got our tickets through Groupon a while ago, so it was much cheaper than usual charges.

Each person gets three rides or crafts, and the girls used ours too, so they were both able to do a pony ride, train ride, arrowhead necklace, leather imprint, and a pioneer craft (bracelet for Violet, bag for Cora). They loved seeing the pioneer 'dress-ups', especially the children, doing pioneer chores, and playing some of the games.

At the Indian Village
Making the leather imprint craft. I think this was the favorite.
Practicing milking a cow game
Friday we were lucky to meet up with our friends Heather, James, and Samuel. We planned more than a month ago to visit the Kennecott mine that day. We were kind of excited to find out a few days before our trip that it was a free day. Evidently a LOT of other people were really excited, and you can't even drive to the parking lot-- you have to ride a shuttle bus. I think I would have rather paid the $5 than spent the extra time and hassle waiting for the bus both ways (I know Heather really would have, since she had to take her stroller on the bus). However, the kids loved the bus, and the whole drive up Violet kept turning to me over and over and saying 'This is so much fun!'. They loved the touring style bus, and I think most of all, not wearing a seatbelt or using a carseat.

Seeing the mine pit is always a huge reminder of where all the metals and minerals we use come from. Double emphasis on huge... the size of this pit is incredible, and driving through a lot of the mining area on the way up gives a glimpse on how huge this operation is.
Luke loved watching the trucks move along the road in and out of the pit.
Love these cute little friends!
The little visitors center museum has some fun stuff in it too. The maps and diagrams of the pit development over the last 100 years were most interesting to me. Luke was most interested in the 3 display cases full of mini vehicles they use at the mine.
So excited! He could have stayed here for a long time!

Cora started summer soccer today! This morning was a little clinic, and she'll have games every Wednesday for five weeks (they don't do practice for the kindergarten team). She's pretty excited about it. It'll be especially fun that Kevin is coaching and she has 3 friends from the neighborhood and preschool on her team. So cute! We're making progress! I finally clued into the fact that kindergarten starts later than regular school, so Cora won't start until August 3rd so... more time to play!

Happy Independence Day!

How fun to have a whole long weekend to celebrate Independence Day! Friday night we headed downtown to watch the Army band perform in a patriotic concert. It really was excellent, and very inspiring-- helped me remember why we are celebrating, and provided an easy way to explain to the girls about the meaning of the holiday too.

The concerts in the park are such a good way to introduce kids to music too. We sat up front on a blanket, and the girls could see all the instruments. It's casual, so the kids can move around a bit or go to the back to play or even leave without being disruptive. And it's free! I can't say enough good things about them. Anyway, we enjoyed ourselves.

Saturday morning we were able to attend my cousin Anna's baptism. I've been wanting to take the girls to one for some time now, and it was even more interesting to them to see a family member baptized. It was a really beautiful meeting, and it was fun to visit with family afterward. The only not-so-fun part was having Luke throw-up 2 minutes before we pulled into the church parking lot. Poor guy! The curvy road to Stansbury always seems to make someone in the car sick.

Saturday night I pulled Cora out of bed to attend the Riverton fireworks. We went a little on the later side, but we still got a great spot and found parking easily. She was so excited to go. She loved it, but near the end of the 30 minute show she was losing a bit of her attention span. She also figured out which fireworks were the loudest bang and plugged her ears and knew to plug her ears when she saw the tell-tale flash before the bang. I'd love to be able to go every year.

Kissey faces at the camera
Kissie and Pata came over for dinner and brought a HUGE box of fireworks. The girls loved choosing which one Kevin would light next. I had planned on having Luke up because I thought he would enjoy it, but he was tired at 7:30 so he went to bed and didn't even wake up with all the noise outside his window.

Violet liked the fireworks, but they scared her a bit too. She's not one for loud noises (except the self-made I guess).
She put the blanket up and down on this particularly noisy one, alternating feeling excited and scared.

We got a few drizzles near the end of the evening, but nothing too bad. The girls love their umbrellas though, so they thought it was a good excuse to get them out and dance in the rain!
Kevin picked a few of the newly legal aerial fireworks to try out too. They can go up to 150 feet in the air now I think. They are pretty cool. Our neighbors one street up from us bought a ton and put on a good show for us too. We could actually see theirs much better than we could see ours, cranking our heads to look straight up. There's a lot of excitement about these new fireworks. I think we'll be hearing tons of pop-pops every night this month. Good thing they are only legal until the end of July! They do seem to be quite dangerous though. I heard of 3 kids in our neighborhood getting burned when the fireworks malfunctioned. And some people let one off down the street from us that somehow went sideways instead of up, luckily missing Kevin and our house. And these incidents were truly accidental, not people messing around. I'll be curious to see if they stay legal.

Silhouette

I just LOVE my Silhouette! I got it last fall and I have used it quite a bit. I use it for Primary handouts, holiday decorations like leprechaun footprints and a Easter banner, tags on Christmas gifts for neighbors, card-making, lettering and shapes for decorating posters, birthday party invites, all kinds of things. Last weekend I used it to make these little toppers to label brownies for a lunch after my cousin's baptism. So cute and easy! And I haven't even ventured into all the many other ways to use it-- like vinyl, rhinstones on fabric, heat transfers, temporary tattoos.... it's a long list!

I really like that I can buy my shapes online, one at a time, whenever I want. So many of my projects are late at night or spur of the moment, so it's really nice not to have to go to a craft store to pick up a cartridge, and I like only paying for the shapes I want (usually 99 cents a shape, sometimes there are sales). I also like that I can manipulate the shapes on a computer program and alter them however I like. So versatile. It's been a lot of fun.

More information on the machine is here . A spec comparison between the Cricut and the Silhouette is here (I always get that question). And here is the website for the shop where I bought mine. They had the best deal at the time, and it was nice to go pick it up and not pay for shipping.

Birthday party!

I ended up picking just about the worst day in June possible for an outdoor water birthday party. The forecast that said sunny one week before turned to windy and thunderstorms! We came so close to cancelling it, but everything turned out fine. It was windy, but warm, and during the one 7 minute shower we went inside to open presents. Pretty lucky.

I was determined to keep this party on the simple side. It did grow a little bit, but still was pretty inexpensive, low-key, and I left a lot of planning to the last minute. Here's our pre-party prep table-- I couldn't put much outside beforehand because of the wind.
... which we turned into this:
We had a slip n slide on the side of the house, the bounce house, water balloon toss, sponge toss into a sprinkler ring, a kiddie pool full of water guns and dive toys and small toys frozen into ice blocks, and another kiddie pool with a slide. Plus the birthday table. I taped name placemats on a dollar store tablecloth so the kids had a place to put their drinks, goldfish, and popsicles and know whose was whose. We had a cooler of water, a cooler of three kinds of popsicles, and a cooler of water balloons by the game area. It was all free-play time and the 11 girls kept pretty busy jumping from one activity to the other. All of the play toys were things I had, borrowed, or bought cheaply. No homemade treats, just all the popsicles you could eat. We had Disney music playing, a bubble machine going, and beach balls kicking around to help create the theme. Each guest took home one squirt gun, dive toy, water ball, and a bag of swedish fish. Luckily Kissie and Kevin were able to come help with Luke and setting up and everything. I spent most of the 90 minute party opening popsicle wrappers and sticking straws in capri suns.

I made this welcome sign for our fence (a breeze using my Silhouette)
Here's the birthday crew, minus one who didn't want to leave the bounce house :)
Inside to open presents during a quick sprinkle outside
The water balloon toss (into dollar store strainers)
Luke loved throwing the water balls at Kissie, and even loved being on the receiving end too!
So despite the weather, it was a successful party. And now we've got lots of leftover popsicles for the rest of the summer too!
